Early Spring Sightings 2008, Balkwill Lands

Bill Balkwill reports a single Turkey Vulture in the neighborhood on March 22, 2008. Two Killdeer were also observed. Snow fell overnight, approximately 10 cm.

The local Red-tailed Hawks appear to have settled into nesting in the Lily Balkwill Woodland, just west of the pond, as there has been activity at the nest since March 17, 2008.

On March 17, 2008 a single male Wild Turkey was seen in the field south of the Gary Fleming property.

On March 21, a pair of Canada Geese were observed on the pond.

On March 30, 2008, Bill Balkwill reported weasel tracks observed in the woodland as well as mink tracks, possibly a female looking for a den for her young.

At the pond, a pair of Eastern Bluebirds were examining the large duck nesting box. Pairs of Wood Ducks and Mallards have been seen on the pond. The Eastern Phoebe was seen on March 29, 2008. It may be surviving on cluster flies around the old homestead window frames.

Bill Balkwill reported on April 14, 2008 that several thrushes, thought to be Swainson's Thrush and Hermit Thrush, were seen in the last few days. Chipping Sparrows are back while the American Tree Sparrows have departed. Dark-eyed Juncos are still about. Tree Swallows have been around since the beginning of April. Three pairs of Eastern Bluebirds are looking over the nesting boxes. Tufted Titmouse have been heard but not seen. The Wild Turkey was again seen in the front yard by Jack Balkwill. On April 13, 2008 Bill flushed an American Woodcock.

Bill Balkwill observed the season's first two Barn Swallows in the shed on April 17, 2008. On April 16, 2008 a Brown Thrasher was seen digging in the woodland with a second observation April 17, 2008 as the bird was foraging about the Old Logging Road Bladdernut. A Field Sparrow was seen this past week which joined the feisty Chipping Sparrow flock. Jack Balkwill is placing out especially purchased seed for the White-breasted Nuthatches which run upside down over the wooden walls of the old house.

Bill Balkwill reported on April 23, 2008 that a pair of Vesper Sparrows were to be seen around the Balkwill garden. Since the burn on April 16, 2008, at least eight Wild Turkeys have been observed at the burn site while five Wild Turkeys were observed at the rock pile in the Old Logging Road. A Wood Duck is occupying the nesting box at the pond site. An estimated ten or eleven deer are frequenting the Balkwill Lands.

Due to a concern for its safety, the old horse stable in the Building Area was pulled down by a chain attached to a corner post on April 22, 2008. Bill Balkwill estimates that this structure was 150 years old. The horse stable was constructed with old square nails and oak pegs.
